The Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) was first introduced in 1968, issued in the form of a small green booklet, or libreta.
A digital DNI card was introduced in 2009; it was issued with a small booklet, known as the libreta celeste. An updated DNI card was implemented in 2012, now issued without a booklet. The 2009 series DNI cards remains valid; however, from April 1, 2017, only the new DNI card will be accepted.
